CLAREMONT, N.H. — If Jon McKennedy was to win his second-straight Modified Racing Series championship, he was going to have to make a push during the final three weeks of the season.

Push he did.

McKennedy went out and won the first two events of the final MRS swing, and after Sunday’s victory at Twin State Speedway the East Chelmsford, Mass., driver will enter the season finale at Lee USA Speedway with an insurmountable 61-point lead over Ascutney, Vt.’s Dwight Jarvis.

McKennedy started on the pole and led every lap at Seekonk (Mass.) Speedway on October 10 to begin the stretch, but the Twin State Fall Challenge 100 win wasn’t quite as easy a stroll.

“This was a tough race. I started 18th [and] got into the top 10, [but] got caught up in a little wreck,” McKennedy said. “I got shuffled back on a restart and had to pass a lot of cars again. Luckily I had a good enough car to win.”

Steve Masse of Bellingham, Mass., led from the outset of the Fall Challenge 100 with pressure from outside polesitter Jim Boniface and Rob Goodenough. Goodenough poked ahead and led laps 54 and 55 before Masse got back in front.

(Alan Ward photo)Masse and Goodenough, of Swanzey, N.H., traded the lead twice more, but Goodenough was eliminated after contact from Jarvis sent him into the wall on lap 72. McKennedy slipped into the lead past Masse on lap 83 and drove to the win, his fourth of the year.

Masse finished second, followed by Matt Hirschman of Northampton, Pa., Les Hinckley, III, of Windsor Locks, Conn., and rookie Joey Jarvis of Ascutney, Vt.

Ken Barry finished sixth ahead of Chris Pasteryark, Jacob Dore, and Eddy Spiers. Dwight Jarvis faded to tenth at the finish.

The race took only one hour and 10 minutes to complete despite 13 caution periods. Thirteen of the 21 starters finished on the lead lap.

McKennedy will officially celebrate his second consecutive BobValentiAutoMall.com Modified Racing Series championship at Lee USA Speedway’s annual “Oktoberfest” finale on October 23/24.
