BARRE — A pair of young drivers earned their first career wins on Thursday night at Thunder Road.

Tyler Austin and Stephen Martin eached scored career win number one in the Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers and Allen Lumber Street Stocks, respectively.

Austin, of East Calais, started from the outside pole position and quickly took the lead from polesitter Kevin Streeter. From there, Austin held on to the top spot through the 40-lap VP Racing Fuels event to claim his first career win in the caution-free event.

The win for the sophomore driver comes after a season of quick cars but numerous misfortunes.

“This is so worth it,” Austin said. “I have to thank everyone that has been a part of this.

“It’s unbelievable.”

Rookie Streeter of Waitsfield settled for second with hometown driver Jason Pelkey third. Freshman driver Kelsea Woodard finished fourth with two-time feature winner this season Kyle Streeter completed the top-five finishers.

Trevor Lyman, rookie Brandon Lanphear, Colin Cornell, point leader Joel Hodgdon, and Mike Martin finished sixth through tenth, respectively.

The Craftsbury driver took the lead on lap 10 from Patrick Tibbetts and then held off Logan Powers on the lone restart of the event on lap 11. From there, Martin drove away to claim the win.

“This is unbelievable,” Martin said. “I’ve been waiting for this since the first race of the season. Last year was rough, but we had a good enough car to win, we just didn’t have the luck.

“We’ve had a good enough car this year; it’s been a rocket. We just never had the luck. Finally, our luck changed.

“This is great. This is the best feeling ever.”

Powers, of Middlesex, finished second while Tibbetts settled for third. Point leader Matthew Smith finished fourth with Dean Switser Jr. fifth.

Sixth through tenth went to Brandon Gray, Jeffrey Martin, Trevor Rossi, Gary Mullen, and last week’s feature winner Tim Hunt.

Thunder Road will host their Mid-Season celebration on Thursday, July 26 with the double point counting Times Argus Mid-Season Championships. Post time is set for 7:00pm.
