Alexander Disqualified From Monadnock Finish

- Justin St. Louis on 03 May 2011

WINCHESTER, N.H. -- Kirk Alexander’s number was taken off the scoreboard following the Valenti Modified Racing Series’ Bond Auto Spring Dash 100 at Monadnock Speedway Saturday night. The West Swanzey, N.H., driver led 56 laps and crossed the finish line in fourth place, but his car was discovered to have an illegal carburetor spacer in post-race technical inspection.

“We sent out an amendment to clarify our carb spacer rule over the last few weeks, and [Alexander] had the wrong one on his car,” VMRS series director John Hoyt told Vermont Motorsports Magazine on Monday. “Kirk told us before the race that he had the wrong spacer on and he was going to change it. He changed it, but the spacer he put on after was illegal as well.”

Hoyt said that he believes Alexander made an honest mistake; Alexander was forthcoming with the information of the original part before the start of the event, but he did not bring the replacement part to inspectors before installing it.

“I think it was a misunderstanding on Kirk's part," Hoyt said. "We certainly would have told him that he had the wrong part the second time around if he’d brought it over to us before the race, but we don’t go looking at engines ahead of time. It’s our job to find illegal parts after the race, not before it.”

Kirk AlexanderAlexander, a three-time Valenti Modified Racing Series champion and the tour’s all-time leading feature winner, was disqualified from his fourth-place finish and will receive no championship points or purse money from the Bond Auto Spring Dash 100. No further sanctions will be levied.

Les Hinckley of Windsor Locks, Conn., was the winner with Louie Mechalides second and Jon McKennedy third. After Alexander’s disqualification, Rob Goodenough inherited fourth place with Dwight Jarvis fifth.

The Valenti Modified Racing Series season resumes at Twin State Speedway in Claremont, N.H., on Saturday, May 28.
