GROVETON, N.H. -- The Munce’s Superior Petroleum Products “Clash of the Titans 150” Late Model event is building steam as the weekend approaches. The second annual $5,000-to-win event is Sunday at the high-banked Riverside Speedway in Groveton, N.H.
Lee USA Speedway champion Wayne Helliwell, Jr., of Dracut, Mass., won last year’s inaugural Clash in dramatic fashion. After a race-long three-way battle for the win with White Mountain Motorsports Park ace Quinny Welch and hometown favorite Randy Potter, Helliwell -- suffering from heat exhaustion in 95-degree temperatures -- took the lead with seven laps remaining. He had to be helped from his car in victory lane and received medical attention before accepting his trophy.
All three of the leading drivers were complimentary of the track and each other. “If I could run with those guys every week, I'd come up here and run every single week,” said Helliwell in victory lane last year. “I pride myself on being able to run bumper-to-bumper with people and not hitting, and it was really awesome to be able to come up here and run like that for 150 laps.”
Helliwell, Welch, and Potter are among the pre-entered drivers for the second annual Clash of the Titans 150. Helliwell won a qualifying event at Lee USA last Friday and is a guaranteed starter, as are qualifying event winners Travis Fadden (White Mountain), Cody LeBlanc (Riverside), and Aaron Fellows (Canaan Fair Speedway).
According to track promoter Jean LeBlanc, other top drivers that have shown interest and may enter the event include multi-time Pro All Stars Series champion Ben Rowe, American-Canadian Tour stars Brent Dragon and John Donahue, and former Oxford 250 winner “Rocket” Roger Brown, as well as White Mountain Motorsports Park standouts Stacy and Tyler Cahoon, Thunder Road Int’l Speedbowl point leader Dave Pembroke, and top Riverside drivers Paul Schartner, Dilyn and Jesse Swister, Corey and Bryan Mason, and teenager Brett Gervais.
Time trial pole position qualifying for the Clash will be held as part of a full Saturday night program beginning at 6:00pm; the Saturday night card includes the $500-to-win Coca-Cola Classic 50 for Riverside’s Super Stock division, as well as events for the Street Stock, Angel, and Daredevil divisions.
Sunday’s program begins at 1:30pm with qualifying races for the Clash, PASS Modifieds and the PASS Sportsman and Riverside Outlaw Sportsman divisions. Main events will be run for Riverside’s Cyclone and Tornado Mini-Truck divisions, followed by the PASS events and the $5,000-to-win Munce’s Superior Clash of the Titans 150.
General admission is $10 on Saturday and $20 on Sunday.
