Seuss Wins Wild Modified Show At Oxford
OXFORD, Me. -- Andy Seuss may have been the winner of the Modified Racing Series event at Oxford Plains Speedway on Saturday night, but he was far from being the only star of the night.
Seuss, of Hampstead, N.H., was one of five drivers to lead the Maine-ly Action Sports 100, and was part of a competitive, position-changing battle throughout the race. Seuss started fifth on the 24-car field and engaged in a battle involving Jack Bateman, David Pinkham, Todd Annarummo, Louie Mechalides, and others for the entire distance.
The race went caution-free for the first 73 laps before Joe Doucette’s engine expired. Mechalides, of Tyngsboro, Mass., passed Bateman for the lead one lap after the restart, then battled with Seuss for the next ten laps. Another restart on lap 84 allowed Seuss to take the lead on the outside lane, and he cruised to the fifth MRS win of his career.
“When Mechalides got by me [for third place on lap 60], I thought that was it,” said Seuss. “I just had to adjust my line a little bit and get back around. He ran me real clean and everybody ran a clean race.”
Seuss dedicated his win to a fallen friend.
“Jay Hull was a close friend of mine that was building a Late Model for us to run [Sunday],” said Seuss. “He passed away and we can’t win tomorrow for him, but we won tonight.”
Mechalides settled for the runner-up spot, with Swansea, Mass., driver Annarummo a career-best third. Matt Hirschman, of Northampton, Pa., and Bateman, of Canaan, N.H., completed the top five. Steve Masse, point Les Hinckley, rookie Geoff Gernhard, defending MRS champion Jon McKennedy, and Ascutney, Vt., rookie Joey Jarvis rounded out the unofficial top ten.
