WATERBURY --
Thunder Road promoter Tom Curley sure knows how to keep it interesting.

As of Monday afternoon, Curley and his team of officials stationed at Stowe Street in Waterbury -- headquarters for the Barre race track -- have yet to decide a rather important detail concerning Thursday’s Late Model championship finale: The lap count.

Said media director Nick Bigelow: “Some people noticed in last week’s program that admission for this week is ten dollars and not the regular nine-fifty, and they asked if that means there’s going to be more laps. Tom hasn’t made a decision yet. Stay tuned.”

The track usually runs 50-lap features for its headline Late Model division but has been known to shake things up here and there. The feature on August 12 was extended to 55 laps in honor of the 55th anniversary of that night’s presenting sponsor, Aaron’s Sales & Leasing. In 2001, a 70-lap Tiger Sportsman event was run in honor of WDEV Radio’s 70th anniversary. Just last year, the Late Model championship finale was a 100-lap event.

Bigelow confirmed that the track’s usual point scoring system would be in place, however, with the feature winner earning 75 points, the runner-up 68 points, third place 66 points, and a declination of two points for each subsequent position. Qualifying heats will continue to award 14 points to the winner, 12 for second, 10 for third, 6 for fourth, 4 for fifth, and 2 for all others.

Dave Pembroke of Middlesex enters Thursday’s Aubuchon Hardware finale with a slim two-point margin over Barre’s Nick Sweet, with Montpelier’s Phil Scott just eight points out of the lead.
