Kevin Chaffee had to earn his first Sprint Cars of New England win as he successfully held off past series champion Chris Donnelly in the closing stages of Sunday’s race at Legion Speedway.

Chaffee started tenth in the 18-car field and moved his way toward the front of the field on the tight quarter-mile track. Chaffee took the lead on lap 20 from then-leader Chris Downs and was followed by Donnelly. The 2011 Vermont Motorsports Magazine Driver of the Year used every maneuver possible to keep Donnelly behind him, and succeeded as the checkered flag flew.

“I think I only could have pushed him up about another four inches before I put him in the concrete,” the Fairlee, Vt., racer said about his race with Donnelly. “It’s a lot of fun racing Chris. In my first year racing Sprint Cars, he robbed his first win from me coming off turn four on the last lap and I did everything I could do to prevent that tonight. I tried using the top, the bottom, any place that I thought he might go to pass me. This time it worked out, but I think if he had a couple of more laps he might have got by me. Thank God he didn’t.”

The third place point man from a year ago has had a rough season, but was able to trudge through the difficulties to his first series win.

“It was a lot of fun racing with Kevin,” the second place finisher Donnelly, of Piermont, N.H., said. “He’s been having a tough time in these things and it’s really great to see him get his first win. He was throwing everything he had to try to slow me up and I was trying to second guess him but I just didn’t do it quick enough.”

Downs scored his career best finish with his third place showing. There Meredith, N.H., rookie took the lead from polesitter Shawn Berry on lap 17. Berry, of Center Ossipee, finished fourth after he scored his first career SCoNE win at Legion in June. Shawn Lawler, of Mason, N.H., finished fifth.

Matt Robie, Will Hull, and Bob Giuliani finished sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively. Defending series champion and current second place point man Dan Douville finished ninth, with third place point holder Clay Down tenth.

Donnelly, unofficially, extended his point lead from four points to 22 points over Douville. Dow sits in third, 76 markers back.

The Sprint Cars of New England return to action on Friday night, August 10 at Canaan Dirt Speedway for their final series point counting event of the season.
