LaDuc, Ryan Modified winners; Miller’s Gremlin wins; Brown repeats in Bombers

WEST HAVEN --
Victory Lane was a turnstile place at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday, as ten different drivers celebrated wins in eleven feature events. Back-to-back rainouts prompted officials to hold double features for five of the track’s six divisions on Heritage Family Credit Union Night.

Tim LaDuc of Orwell earned the first asphalt win of his career in the opening 30-lap Modified event. LaDuc started third and made his way past polesitter Matt Depew to take the lead on the third lap. A caution one lap later for Adam Bartemy was LaDuc’s only challenge for the win. Mike Bruno of Castleton finished second, but was never closer than five car lengths to LaDuc’s rear bumper.

Tim LaDuc in Modified victory lane at Devil's Bowl Speedway“It felt really good [to win]. It’s been a tough season for me, a lot of ups and downs,” said LaDuc. “The transition from dirt to asphalt is tremendously different and I think we’re finally starting to get the hang of it. The biggest thing is just being really smooth. On dirt you can make up a lot in the corners, on asphalt you can’t. If you get a little loose on the asphalt, people are just going to be gone, and on dirt you can make it up. The asphalt is a really tough deal but it’s finally coming together for us.”

Point leader Kenny Tremont, Jr., of West Sand Lake, N.Y., made a late rally from the back of the pack to finish in third place, but did so at the cost of a broken crankshaft bolt. Vince Quenneville, Jr., and Marc Johnson completed the top five.

Jimmy Ryan with his fans in victory lane at Devil's BowlIn the Modified nightcap, Whiting veteran Jimmy Ryan earned his second Devil’s Bowl win of the season by leading all 30 laps. Accidents and flat tires took affected several of the top contenders including LaDuc and Johnson in a crash on lap 1. Following the lap 1 restart, contact forced Tremont -- driving his back-up car -- into the infield; he would break the right-front steering link on his car on lap 12 and careen into the outside retaining wall.

Bruno, Quenneville, and Chazy, N.Y., veteran Leon Gonyo all challenged Ryan throughout the race, but Bruno and Quenneville both suffered flat tires late in the race. Gonyo held on for second place behind Ryan, and Quenneville rebounded over the final eight laps to finish third. LaDuc finished fourth with Ray Martindale fifth.

Five cautions slowed the race, which Ryan used to his advantage. “I liked [the restarts],” he said. “I could hold it down low but I wasn’t as fast as I needed to be. The restarts took some of their momentum away, and that’s what I needed.”

With the championship decided next Sunday, Tremont unofficially leads Bruno into the finale by 23 points, 619-596.

Jack Swinton celebrates his Sportsman win at Devil's BowlJack Swinton of Hudson Falls, N.Y., earned his first Sportsman victory of the season in the division’s first 25-lap feature. Don Miller of Wells finished second with point leader Hunter Bates of Middlebury third. Miller took a popular win -- his eighth of the year -- in the second feature while driving a retro-styled AMC Gremlin-bodied car, using the roof from a car Tremont drove in 1985. Paul Dunham, Jr., was the runner-up with Swinton third. Unofficially, Bates leads the points over Miller, 502-480, entering the finale.

Jeremy Houghtaling (#77) races Fred Little (#19) on his way to his first career Pro Stock/Super Street Challenge winJeremy Houghtaling of Malta, N.Y., earned his first career victory in the first Pro Stock/Super Street Challenge event of the night, beating Fred Little and Bobby Schmidt. Mendon’s Chris Wilk won the second race over Kim Duell and Chad White.

Jon Miller of Malta, N.Y., won the special 50-lap Renegade feature to open the night, taking his seventh win of the season over Brandon Emigh and Bill Duprey. Emigh’s brother, David, won the regular 20-lap feature later in the evening over Randy Alger. Jon Miller recovered from a flat tire to drive from ninth to finish third in the final five laps.

Chad Brown of Essex Junction won both 15-lap Bomber Warrior features over Kayla Bryant, and Scott Atwood of Castleton won the lone Duke Stock feature.
