BRADFORD -- Saturday is a big day at Bear Ridge Speedway.
The first annual New England Dirt Track Championships are coming to the quarter-mile track, offering teams in all five regular weekly divisions a chance at extra laps and extra money. The event will also decide the 2010 track champions.
Each division will race 50-lap features split into twin 25-lap segments; points will be kept for each segment, with the winner earning one point, the runner-up earning two points, etc. The finish of the first segment will be in inverted to start the second segment, leaving the first-segment winner starting last on the field. The driver with the lowest combined two-segment point total will be named the overall winner in each division.
Twenty-seven year-old Adam Pierson of Fairlee will look to wrap up his sixth career Bear Ridge track championship in the Sportsman Modifieds, where he leads three-time defending champion Gary Siemons of Orford, N.H., by 62 points. Several top drivers are expected for the Sportsman Modified event including Sprint Cars of New England champion Chris Donnelly, Canaan Dirt Speedway champion Dan Eastman, Twin State Modified Series champion Kevin Chaffee, and Bear Ridge feature winners Mike Dunn, Jason Gray, rookie Ryan Dutton, Jim Morgan, and Jack Cook.
Pierson’s father, Gene, will try to hold off his brother Melvin for the Sportsman Coupe championship, as just 31 points separate them at the top of the standings. Will Hull leads Tyler Stygles in the Limited Late Models, while Josh Sunn and Tom Placey are virtual locks for the Fast Four and Hornet divisions, respectively.
A feature race will be held for the Hornet Queens, where Melissa King looks to wrap up her championship season, along with a demolition derby, a fireworks display, and kids bicycle giveaways. Racing begins at 6:00pm.
