Chaffee, Begor show strong in Futures races

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Adam Pierson led the way for area drivers during NAPA Super Dirt Week at Oswego Speedway.

The East Corinth driver finished eighth in the 50-lap Sportsman Modified feature on Sunday night that saw Dave Marcuccilli win over Greg Martin and Rocky Warner.

Pierson qualified in the 14th position during time trial qualifying on Friday that saw over 80 cars attempt to post time and would go on to finish third in his 15-lap qualifying race.

Fellow Bear Ridge driver Kevin Chaffee also traveled to Oswego and posted the 31st quickest time during time trials for the Sportsman Chevy Performance 50 and finished seventh in his 15-lap qualifying race. The Bradford driver would be forced to race his way into the big Sportsman Modified show on Sunday, but his car came to a stop early in his last chance qualifier while running in a transfer spot and he failed to qualify.

New York driver Jamy Begor also attempted to qualify for the Sportsman Modified portion of Super Dirt Week and posted the 39th quickest time during time trials. Begor would then finish eighth in his 15-lap qualfying race. The Mooers Forks, N.Y. driver, however, was caught up in a massive wreck during his last chance qualifier and did not qualify.

New Hampshire driver Adam Gage posted the 47th quickest time during Friday’s time trials, but did not attempt his last chance qualifier.

Pierson, Chaffee, and Gage also attended the two Sportsman Modified Super Dirt Week support shows at Weedsport Speedway and Brewerton Speedway.

Pierson was the most successful of the three, qualifying for both feature events and finishing 26th at Weedsport and 16th at Brewerton.

Chaffee finished 21st at Brewerton on Thursday night, but failed to qualify for the feature race on Wednesday night at Weedsport. Gage failed to qualify for both shows.

Begor led the way in the Sportsman Modified Futures races with a sixth place finish in the first 15-lap event that was run on Friday night after starting sixth. Gage finished 19th in that same event.

Chaffee would run from a last place starting spot in the second Sportsman Modified Futures race to finish 14th. Pierson did not run after being involved in a practice incident.

Brian Whittemore of Pittsford would attempt to qualify for the Bud Light 300 Big Block event, but failed to do so after he posted the 54th quickest time during time trials.

Multi-time Super DIRTcar Series champion Matt Sheppard ran for Rutland’s C.G. Morey in the 358 Modified 100-lap event. Sheppard would run out of fuel late in the event while in contention for the race win and finish 18th.

Former Super Dirt Week winner and Devil’s Bowl Speedway regular Kenny Tremont Jr. would compete in both the Big Block and 358 feature events and posted finishes of 13th and 24th, respectively.
